Los Angeles: 2nd most dangerous city for pedestrians

Statistics show Los Angeles is the second most dangerous city for pedestrians in the country.

According to a recent report, called Dangerous by Design 2014, the Los Angeles area is the second most dangerous in the United States when it comes to pedestrian fatalities.

In all, pedestrians accounted for more than 28 percent of all traffic deaths in the Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Ana area during the period from 2003 to 2012.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported similar statistics in 2012. According to the NHTSA, Los Angeles saw the second-most total number of pedestrian deaths of any city in the United States that year. In all, 99 pedestrians were killed in Los Angeles in 2012, second only to New York City, where 127 pedestrians lost their lives.

According to the NHTSA, pedestrian deaths accounted for 41 percent of all traffic fatalities in Los Angeles in 2012.

While Los Angeles is the second most dangerous city in the country, the NHTSA reported that California is the most dangerous state for pedestrians in the U.S. In all, over 610 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in California in 2012.

Pedestrian accidents on the rise across the US

Sadly, the NHTSA reported that pedestrian fatalities are increasing across the country. From 2011 to 2012, the number of pedestrians killed in auto accidents rose by 6 percent. In all, over 4,740 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle accidents in the United States in 2012, according to the NHTSA. Those fatalities accounted for 14 percent of all traffic deaths in the country that year.

Often, pedestrian accidents are the result of a motorist failing to notice an individual on foot. Drivers should always be aware of pedestrians, particularly when making a turn or passing through a crosswalk. Motorists should take particular care when it is dark outside and during inclement weather.

Pedestrians can take precautions, as well. For instance, pedestrians should always try to cross the street in a marked crosswalk and use sidewalks whenever they are available.

Motorists must take care when driving to ensure the safety of all those traveling on foot. When a negligent driver causes a pedestrian accident, the injured party should hold the motorist accountable for the damage done in the collision. If you or someone you love has been involved in a pedestrian crash in California, you need to seek the advice of a knowledgeable personal injury attorney.
